 Melatonin is the most powerful endogenous free radical scavenger known at present. Its free radical scavenging ability is 2 times of VE, 4 times of glutathione and 14 times of mannitol. The results showed that melatonin had a strong antioxidant effect on streptozotocin induced diabetes in rats, and decreased blood glucose and fructosamine. Melatonin also plays a role in some organs. Thymus is the main target organ for melatonin to regulate immune function. After pinealectomy or drug inhibition of melatonin synthesis, thymus development and function will be significantly reduced, and thymus weight will gradually recover after melatonin supplementation.
